According to the OED, the origin of the word “orange” (referring to the fruit) is unknown. It’s thought to have been borrowed from Southeast Asia, though that’s unclear.
When first imported to Europe, oranges were called “Chinese apples.”
The French region of “Orange” originally had nothing to do with the fruit and appears to originate from a Latin word that evolved in into the “orange” pronunciation.
