Dunno about Aus law, but I think in English law you have to demonstrate that there's a technical point of law you think the judge made a mistake on in the first hearing. You can't just appeal on the grounds of "I think he got the judgement wrong."
I believe US law is similar, which has lead to some extraordinary miscarriages of justice where modern forensics demonstrate a person in prison is innocent, but because no mistake was made in law, it was simply that this sort of evidence wasn't available at the time of trial, there are no legal grounds for appeal.
