They run on a mix of oil and gas to keep lubricated without separate oil tanks, and thus also burn the oil, which is very dirty. Plus they don't burn the fuel well, so lots go in the exhaust. For those, the 300 miles figure may be true. But four stroke engines are just miniature car engines, maybe somewhat less efficient but not by order of magnitude.
