Among people I know, the switch from physical media to downloading and streaming was partly a middle finger to corporate publishers, a direct action against their profit-mongering and gatekeeping. It was also part of a strategy for surviving on low incomes.
But having less stuff to move every time we had to leave a rental (or a squat) was also a big motivator.
