This alligator juniper looks like it's survived multiple instances of people encircling its trunk with a rope or wire, perhaps to use it as the corner of a corral or other enclosure. In addition to the two obvious scars on its lower trunk, if you look carefully you can see a third higher up, and we could see two more even higher up. Poor tree. But it seems to be thriving now that it's in Bandelier, where it's protected.
