I also first learned about temporal dithering because the built-in display of a new Dell laptop was flickering badly on Linux (but not on the BIOS or GRUB screens), and doing a suspend cycle fixed it (until the next reboot). I reported on the freedesktop bugzilla (https://bugzilla.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29248), and was told by the developers there that the temporal dithering mode was the culprit (with a patch to set the correct mode, which worked and was upstreamed).
