Initially there was a small hole (maybe impact from something pointy), but then it *spread* like some sort of subsurface infection from there. The surface finish in the affected area became brittle and came off, then I put the plastic sticker on.

(And another one on the other side where it's not breaking, but was starting to discolor.)
