The TF2 devs promoted Minecraft. Just... Out of the goodness of their heart??? On their official blog for game updates??? Just saying, "Yeah, update's a bit weak today, all of our staff has been playing minecraft. Go check it out!"
That's just not something that happens. Not without financial insentive.
Gaming was different when I was a baby... And I mean that literally, TF2 was released the year after I was born. I would've been 5 when Minecraft fully released.

Not that I regret it, it paid off massively, but how the fuck did we get there???
Was someone just a fucking time traveler? did someone just have foresight and knew they'd create the fucking Half-Life of super hero games? (Or would Quake would better in this analogy?) Did they just not care as much as Rocksteady did?
I don't think a company would take a chance on a studio like that these days.
