Here's the thing about Pixelfed and Bookwyrm and whatever the Youtube alternative is and the one that's apparently going to replace Tiktok and everything else. I love the Fediverse, truly I do, but it's so much to ask of people to migrate away from every platform they already know and love to new ones that have a steeper learning curve whether y'all want to admit they do or not. People like what's familiar and easy and what they perceive to already work and meet their needs just fine, and even if they're aware that there are issues with Facebook/Instagram/Goodreads/Twitter/etc, it's massively overwhelming to think about learning new things and starting over from scratch. Especially because for most people, social media isn't their highest priority.

This is not me saying complacency is good or that we shouldn't bother creating better alternatives. I'm here, after all, and this is my favorite social media space by miles and I would love it if everyone I know would join. I personally didn't find it difficult or stressful to figure out Mastodon even in the beginning. But I'm just one person and my experience isn't everyone's, and what I am saying is that the smugness and shaming of people who remain on those billionaire-owned surveilling platforms is bad and gross and unproductive.
