It translates to 'criticism of society', and in practice, it amounted to writing books and drawing silly cartoons and complaining in letters to editor by how so many Little People are not doing some insignificant thing right. Probably the best-known examples are complaining how people enjoyed jazz music which they shouldn't have, or wore blue jeans which had been denounced.
Ironically, some academic applications of Critical Theory, usually without the Political Technology(tm) implications, have become called the same thing, not entirely unlike exactly the other way from what happened to Critical Race Theory in USA.
