Like, the main thing about Shinkai is that he is in love with both slice of life and heavily plotted films. And with Your Name, and Weathering With You, he very awkwardly flipped between the two modes in a way that made those films really drag (Weathering more than Your Name, to be sure).
Suzume'a main plot never really lets up until the credits roll. Slice of life elements are still present, but Shinkai has figured out how to integrate them naturally so they don't slow the pace down.
