It's actually even simpler than that. Trump doesn't need to do them and so he doesn't. In fact, refusing to debate -- without consequence -- makes him stronger in the eyes of his followers.
His followers are empowered by his autocracy and facile patriotism. Debates are less than meaningless to them.
It's sad and terrifying. To debate would be to participate in the democratic process. They have no interest in this.
