still drowning
gruesomely, blamelessly, unexpectedly
ninety-three years after trafalgar
the linings of my veins feel scraped out
sealing the coffin, transcending to heaven
not even anger but sheer exasperation
inside the seven marble columns
i watch from the side of the stage
the queue number changed with a buzz
an exemplification of the power
it seemed like a sign from the gods
two thousand feet above the ruined earth
we have no business with the dead
“this is my vision,” i say,
and in the second it takes for me
to tell you the truth
calling with the warning of a lifetime
as black and deep as bottomless pits
the storm will fall behind us
earth is the shore of the cosmic ocean
drowning out everything around me
with blackened faces in their bare hands
i’m going to . . . no . . . yes. yes.
