A peculiarity I have noticed on neighborhood mailing lists -- there's lots of discussions around getting home services done, (e.g., crawlspace remediation, roofing, tree removal) and people will say "Acme Tree Zappers have a better rate" BUT...

nobody discusses actual dollar figures. It's an absolute mystery most of the time to me what a fair price should be for something like tree removal. Getting people to say "I paid $X to remove a 60-foot tree" is like pulling teeth. Why???
