One thing I've noticed about the radio side of prepping is that you can quickly spend a king's ransom, a penny at a time. You got a radio, now you need an SWR meter. That stock antenna will burn up your radio, so you need a Nagoya. You're losing all your power through that cheap coax, you need upgrade that.
I agree with his assessment though. This repeater stuff - and how to program your radio to use them - requires a non-negligible time investment.
My impression so far is that if you're planning to get into GMRS but aren't interested in the repeater side of things, you might be better off buying some simple blister pack radios and hope Starlink to cell can fill in the gaps.
