Speaking of open source projects that just fall completely flat...
Evince (or "Document Viewer" or "GNOME Document Viewer" depending on where you look, which is user-unfriendly confusion in itself) on my system opens PDFs in a tiny window that immediately requires adjustment to be usable. Something so blatantly wrong should just not be possible.
Looked at SumatraPDF (ePUB files too? handy!), but... then I saw Windows-only, which is a whole different kind of open-source project fail.
