I'm not sure we can entirely dismiss the existence of the claimed attractions and revulsions of conservatives.

One partial theory I have is that the same aversion to "clutter" or "visual chaos" that makes some rabid about graffiti plays a role in hating tattoos and piercings. Basically the less cognitive capability you have to process complexity, the more you want things made forcibly simple.
