This equestrian statue, known as the Golden Rider (der Goldene Reiter), portrays Augustus the Strong, dressed in Roman armour. It was commissioned after his death, in 1733, by his son and heir.
Augustus was the Elector of Saxony and sometime King of Poland, and was the man responsible for creating the baroque city and art collections that attract so many visitors to Dresden today.
He was reputedly able to break a horseshoe with his bare hands.
