If it wasn't for the top tier character design with Yooka, Laylee, and Trowser, I flat-out wouldn't have believed that people with experience in the industry made the game, and I still struggle to believe that former legends of the industry made it. Like, what the fuck *happened*???
The humor was obnoxious, the levels were uninspired, the music was grating, and the plot was awful. It really felt like someone fed Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie to an AI to generate Yooka-Laylee, because everything in it just feel like a completely bastardized misunderstanding of why Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie worked as well as they did. It really shows that the Stampers being fairly draconian and overly opinionated on game development actually worked to the developers' benefit, because left to their own devices they made complete garbage.
Speaking of the game not wanting you to play it, I love that the entire game can basically be circumvented by just clipping on the level geometry until the game totally just says "fuck it " and gives you the ability to fly anywhere. Again, totally misunderstanding the original games and *why* the power-up pads like the flight pads were important.
