"There are no atheists in foxholes."
It's a military saying that some believe was first heard in the U.S. island hopping campaign of WWII.
I first heard a version of it from my officer in charge while at my first permanent duty station in 1994 and soon after a version of the quote in the movie, "Siege of Firebase Gloria".

My younger brother called me just a bit ago to ask if I have talked to our dad recently.
I said, "No I haven't. He hasn't wanted anything to do or say to me in two and a half years.
"well... maybe you could call him. He's pretty sick."
"Look, I appreciate this is probably a hard call for you to make. But his narcissistic view of the world has him believing that I disrespected him when our mother was dying. He's been an asshole his entire life, he abused our mother in every way possible before he left her with five children and I finally woke up to both those facts. I'm not gonna call him."
He said in a sort of resigned and dismayed tone, "well... I think you should. I really think you should call him. He's really sick and getting pretty bad."
***
All that to say...
my dad is dying from metastasized cancer and that sorry ass son of a bitch can go straight to hell for all I care. Well, that is if I believed in hell.
