Movie, options, and media contracts are the one legit time that you really need an agent.
These legal document are not written to benefit you, the author, but to pay you the least amount possible. Likely, the producers simply need to grab the plot idea and the character interactions so their screenwriters can make a script, but that's okay if they'll pay you. Just as important are things like residuals and royalties, part of the production profits, tie-ins to your own library of works, etc. However, of up most importance, you must get a pieces of ALL tie-in merchandise.

Together they negotiate You will get the large pittance possible.
