I also realized that Usenet and web forums thrived because we interacted with common interests, and the "sploosh, here's all of my life" that's encouraged by modern social media dissuades us from finding commonalities. I don't see strong community coming from that, mostly it's causing me to back away from communities I'd otherwise participate in.
