Thinking through it a bit, I really don't think you can take this kind of photo at all with a smartphone. Even if you used the smartphone's flash (defused, bounced it somehow) and had a slave flash off to the right for the side fill light. Because slaves are a bit slow, and depending on how fast you're capturing the action to freeze things (I shoot these at 1/180th a second), most likely the slave flash won't time up properly with the smartphone's flash.
Plus, if you didn't diffuse or bounce the smartphone's flash, you'd get really harsh light and shadow.
This was shot with two Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT flashes, one on camera and bouncing up and behind me, -1 stop. The second is off to the right, laying on the kitchen counter, pointing at the ceiling and +1 on the exposure.
