Payment Censorship in the Lightning Network Despite Encrypted Communication
https://drops.dagstuhl.de/entities/document/10.4230/LIPIcs.AFT.2024.12
The research emphasizes that the Lightning Network, while offering scalability and privacy improvements over the Bitcoin blockchain, is still vulnerable to network-level censorship attacks. By analyzing packet headers and using timing and traffic analysis, a malicious actor could potentially block or censor payments, which poses a risk to both privacy and the overall reliability of the network.
To counteract these risks, the study proposes using constant message sizes and dummy traffic as potential solutions to obscure payment flows and prevent such attacks from being successful.
