I tested what is the smallest buffer size I can use on the I2S audio output on a Raspberry Pi 4 without dropouts, and the answer is 1.33 ms (128 samples @ 96 kHz). That's quite good. Much better than the built-in headphone device. That means it's fast enough for software synthesis. Will probably get a PiSound hat to use in the prototype.
