Oh yeah that first reference on the ship could be a star spawn, which are like Muppet Babies of Cthulhu. I like how Sandy holds up figurines to show you the scale difference he's talking about. Based on the second encounter where he scoops up three sailors in one hand, he'd have to be at least 100 m tall. IIRC that's twice the height of the largest movie version of Godzilla.
