So then I have to open the file app, long press the image, open up another shell menu and select Share. This opens another menu which includes an option to "Save Image" (again). THIS is the step that finally saves the image to my Photos app, allowing it to be included in a gallery search. That's 8 steps later to make it accessible to the app I need it for.
