I've been trying to articulate why Mastodon (and the Fediverse more broadly) are such a refreshing change from the bird site for me.

I think the best explanation I've come up with is that the feel here is very reminiscent for me of Twitter, pre-2016. A lot of smart, funny, creative people, sharing things that they're passionate about, or found interesting, or funny.
