I've killed so many onions, it's sad. I managed to grow shallots at one point for a few years before they croaked. Something about the soil, and freezing, and me forgetting to water them. Still trying to get potatoes to grow larger than the size of a quarter.
My lazy garden suggestion is don't weed. Weed, till, whatever. Just dig out the spots where you're planting things, and let the weeds grow around them. It is OK to weed only the worst weeds, encouraging the easy to deal with ones. But anywhere that you're not actively planting something should have something growing that you don't have to take care of.
That being said, I need to pull all the clover out from around the potatoes. A nice potato lady told me that potatoes like low nitrogen soils. Clover's just... ugh.
