Potential economic and data protection impacts of a TikTok ban
==========

More than 170 million American users are waiting for the Senate to decide on a bill that could lead to a ban on TikTok in the United States. TikTok's parent company ByteDance, owned by a Chinese firm, is under pressure to sell the app due to national security concerns. If the bill passes and President Biden signs it, the company would have six months to sell or face a ban. Small businesses in Las Vegas are concerned about the app's disappearance as it has helped them gain customers. Shawn Janzen, an Information Technology and Analytics professor at American University, believes a TikTok ban would have a momentary impact as there are other platforms like Instagram and YouTube that offer better monetization efforts for their users. Some American users are concerned about their data in the hands of U.S. regulators and the potential use of the data for influence operations. However, Janzen does not anticipate comprehensive regulation on social media companies in the near future. Congress is still grappling with Section 230, which protects social media companies from being responsible for the content on their platforms.
