Interestingly the same could be true of Greenland. Based on what I've learned thus far, the Europeans who settled there setup farms and improved the soil conditions greatly. However due to a shift in their diet from eating cod to eating farmed produce, their vitamin D levels dropped and they died off or migrated to Iceland. After that, the Inuit moved in and took over their farms because they were made habitable by the Europeans before them.
