You could keep a cached copy of the blockchain (or frequently used lookups), but ultimately yes, under such a scheme you'd have to periodically sync from the blockchain 🤷‍♀️ dosn't every client have to touch dns now?

Sure, you could self-sign records and accept them on your own machines for local routing/testing like you can host your own dns server now.
