Dunedin teacher stabbed partner to death, sentenced to life in prison
==========
Carole Coade, a Dunedin teacher, has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 11 years behind bars for stabbing her partner, Mark Henry Willis, 22 times while he was in the bath. The murder took place on 18 May 2023, and Coade pleaded guilty to the crime. Coade's severe mental illness was acknowledged by Justice Lisa Preston, but she stated that Coade was aware of her actions and not insane. Coade decided to kill Willis so she would end up in prison and have food and shelter provided for her due to her financial situation. Coade and Willis met in 2017 and moved to Dunedin in December 2021. Coade's mental health deteriorated, and she took sick leave from her job in April. Leading up to the murder, Coade made multiple attempts to kill Willis, including drugging him and approaching him with a knife. On the day of the murder, Coade stabbed Willis 22 times, causing fatal wounds. She messaged her children, transferred money, and called the police to confess. Crown prosecutor Richard Smith described the murder as brutal and an enormous breach of trust. Defense counsel Sarah Saunderson-Warner argued that Coade's mental illness was the cause of the murder and that she believed prison was the only viable option for her care. The sentencing took place in the Dunedin High Court, and Coade's name suppression was lifted during the hearing.
