#WordWeavers 2411.15 — How would your story change if you had to use another MC?

I started writing the current WIP (what I think is meant by "your story") with a vague idea of a woman in command and a man in a supporting role facing a first contact situation where the MCs culture would be an anathema to those discovered. I knew of two possible endings I could write toward. In this story, more so than many, I didn't have a set character planned out, just an idea of the disruption that ensues when the characters remove their spacesuits in the lunar habitat. (I've not written that scene yet!) I am discovering her history (and his) as the story progresses.

I could start over from scratch with different characters—make her a tired old admiral and him a young genius scientist wanting to discover something genuinely new—and write toward the same endings. It would generate different characters, different histories, different events. It would rolling the dice while keeping the elements of responsibility, naïvité, mutual admiration, and tense gender roles with sex getting in the way.

They'd be different stories on a related theme, I suppose. It would be sad to leave behind the sense of love I've discovered between the two MCs in the current version, but I might discover something else in the alternate timeline.
