The two angels who had visited Abraham with God arrive in Sodom. Lot greets them at the gate and bows, immediately inviting them in to his house. "Hey come hang out with me and you can go on your way tomorrow morning!" The Angels say "NBD, we'll just spend the night in the town square" and Lot insists they come with him. AKA get inside quickly before the rape squads arrive. The Angels come with him and later that evening a mob of basically everybody in the city is at Lot's door demanding the two men who showed up he released so that they may "know them carnally". People have asked why America or pick your other wicked nation hasn't been destroyed like Sodom and Gomorrah, but I think the key is in the pure level of corruption. Abraham pled God to not destroying the city if even 10 good men lived there at the end of chapter 18, to which He agreed.
Genesis 19:4-5 Genesis 19:4-5 — Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. 5And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally.”
I think that's the key. We have a lot of problems, but it's not like EVERY SINGLE PERSON, old and young in Queens or L.A. is going to mob together to rape some angels or other visitors. The rape-squad busts through the door and tried to get Lot for blocking them, and the angels blind them and tell Lot and his family it's time to go ASAP. Lot tried to get his sons in law to come with him, but they think he's joking. The angels drat them out at dawn. The Angels say "don't look back or you'll turn into a pillar of salt" as they drag them out. Lot pleads that they not destroy Zoar, which is like a Podunk little place nearby where he wants to flee to and they agree. Lot's wife doesn't listen and looks back as the city is destroyed and is turned to salt.
They eventually leave Zoar and go to the mountains to a cave nearby. Lot's daughters both get him black out drunk on individual nights in order to have a child by him, as they wanted to preserve the lineage. From them came The Moabites and Ammon.
