our brain has this weird thing that we call "line, please!" where like. headmate a is talking, finishes a sentence, and headmate b suddenly has control of the train of thought. headmate a cannot continue until headmate b says something back even if they don't really have anything they wanna say. it doesn't even just have to be 2 headmates, we have entire "full room" conversations like this
