Is there a fedi server software that blocks images/avatars by default, and only downloads them on demand?
My single-user instance averages around 55KB/sec tx rate it looks like. That's ~140GB per month, which isn't a big deal here anymore, but that's not the case worldwide.
Besides, it's a waste of resources, and increases our reliance on big tech's infrastructure.
The downsides would include slower loading speed for the viewer, and/or missing out on some things where the post is only an image.
And for large instances I'm assuming it could actually add some load, if other servers are constantly requesting tons of images that are no longer cached.
I dunno though. Still feel like it's better to concentrate on lowering the economic and infrastructural barriers to entry.
