My favourite sci-fi subgenre is "Humans are weird". It's mostly confined to fan-works, I've seen basically nothing traditionally published, but it's fun, pointing out how strange humans are even by the standards of their strange world:<li>They invented surgery thousands of years before anaesthesia</li><li>They regard as routine medical procedures what most civilized planets would treat as sickly inventive forms of capital punishment</li><li>They sustain injuries that would kill most lifeforms outright without major impact to their lives. Missing limbs, organ damage, even neurological injuries are more likely to slow a human down than kill them.</li><li>They have the ability to form emotional bonds not only with other, closely related species, but with life-forms whose last common ancestor was a billion years ago or more.</li><li>They can consume very nearly anything organic, and in fact use several common poisons as "flavouring agents' in their food or for recreational use of the deleterious effects of a sub-lethal dose</li>
