I believe that on some level we choose everything in our experience. The alternative is to believe that things are being done to you by evil or as for some sort of punishment/karma.
One belief is empowering & the other is disempowering. You can't change that which you don't first, own.
There are no coincidences & everything is happening for me, not to me. There's lessons to be found in every shitty experience. If I can't learn the lesson then I will be presented with a similar but different lesson later.
You're right, the process is not a straight line but our beliefs dictate how hard or easy it is. It's a process of inclusion not exclusion, of loving those parts of you that have been hurt & traumatized.
Our highest self is the whole, the all that is. All you need to do is love your whole self, unconditionally.
