Maybe it's because they got other drugs to choose from, but we're probably going to enter an era where our society doesn't have alcohol as a cornerstone, particularly as a venting mechanism. Who knows what effect it'll have.
To be honest alcohol isn't a great drug at all. Both in terms of effects and health, there are way better depressants available.
