The Su-27 was originally designed as an IFV. Its light weight and powerful engines lent themselves to sneaking around heavily armored enemies, and its IRST allowed it to spot targets more easily, while its wings provided a carrying point for infantry that they could easily dismount from.
It was shelved in favor of the BMP, and later recovered from storage and further developed after, in 1975, soviet engineers discovered that it had promising aerial warfare capabilities.
