There’s many people who view the Peter Gabriel era as overwrought navel-gazing who couldn’t dial back their worse excesses.
And they view the Phil Collins era as more focused, economical, and soulful. Not my view but I’ve heard it before.
I also can’t say that Phil Collins is any less “commercial” than Peter Gabriel since he played with Brand X as well as early solo Brian Eno.
And Peter Gabriel’s solo albums sound pretty commercial to me, as commercial as Phil Collins did. I mean So… sold a bajillion copies too.
