They posted a statement on Reddit explaining why they don’t adopt Monero as a payment method and why their new wallet doesn’t support Monero. Essentially, they decided not to use Monero due to the risk of legal troubles and being associated with criminality.
I completely get the risk involved with associating your business with a currency like Monero. It’s used on various Tor markets, which gives it a bad reputation among normies and politicians. For cypherpunks, though, the fact that it’s used on black markets is a “good” thing because it proves that Monero serves its purpose of being private, anonymous, and untraceable.
There's a reason why Monero is being used on black markets and not bitcoin. Remember, not too long ago bitcoin was actually being used on black markets. Then the silk road incident happened and they switched to using Monero because Bitcoin is neither private nor untraceable — and that's a problem if you don't want people (the government) to know your identity.
We have examples of businesses accepting Monero, like MullvadVPN. To me, it seems like Proton isn’t willing to fight for the right to privacy like Mullvad is and other companies who accept Monero. If a business really wants to prove they care about user privacy, they MUST accept Monero. Otherwise, they’re simply a joke in my opinion.
I think they are unlikely to ever have the balls to add Monero, unfortunately.
