Their personality will dictate how they adapt to life on the road. My Girls are RSPCA rescues and are recalcitrant misanthropists. They stubbornly refused to socialise with humans as kittens and they took their sweet time adopting me.
This is now their superpower.
I strongly encourage you to treat your cats like working therapy animals and to not allow your cats to socialise with other humans.
It is super-important to cultivate a vibe of misanthropy on the road and this extends to your animals. Humans are your cats’ biggest threat. Mine flee at the first sign of a human to their place of safety. They hide under the covers if they hear a human approach.
Territory is important to a cat and mine have differing approaches. I am Miss Black’s territory. She is sassy and confident wherever I am and this makes her relatively easy to travel with. The car and the tent are Miss Tabby’s territory. Mess with those (and violate her territory) and it could send her bolting into the scrub to find a new safe space.
