Got my instance updated to 4.3.3. I have a solid process now with the included Tangerine UI and Bird UI custom styles applied. At first I was using stash/pop, but it felt too easy to accidentally lose my customizations that way. Now I'm using the patch command (new to me) and it feels less prone to mistakes.
And now that I finally got around to this patch, Mastodon will release another next week probably. :)
