Ran into something like this today as I was working on my family tree. We only have records for 6100 of the 63,000,000 people who lived in the US in 1890 because there was a fire at the national archives building in 1921. In that time, one of my great grandmothers had 6 kids, and may have had more that moved out between 1880 and 1900. Her husband died, or they got divorced, or he died, she married THEN divorced. No way to tell, because there was only one copy, and it burned.
Modern society is held together by a few forgotten and rusting bolts, and recent history is kept in one building that can catch on fire. Terrifying. (yeah yeah it's mostly all digitized now, but my point remains)
