Why so many mass shootings? Sure, too many guns. But also the loss of community and atomization of man. Going and shooting up a place is an especially American way of lashing out; of saying that you are as mad as hell and not going to take it anymore. If "Network" was made today, Howard Beale would shoot up the studio.
This is not apologia. This is saying that the issue is not guns or mental illness, video games or rap music.
Our society is ill -- making man prone to self-destruction.
