Well that's "tagging" (or "mentioning") people, and sure, on Mastodon I will mostly¹ do this.
But when writing in a medium that supports actual hyperlinks (like a blog, or other fedi software), writing out the full username looks bad and isn't particularly accessible either.
¹ but not always, for example when I have reason to believe that it would inconvenience that person, e.g. because they might currently be notification-spammed already, etc.
