People are afraid of the homeless because housing is expensive and they don't want to believe they could eventually fall below the cutoff. We've become a fearful and paranoid society for purely self-inflicted reasons - people can't afford housing or transportation, we hand out guns to the most unstable and insane people, law enforcement operates more like a cartel than a way of seeking justice or safety, and a social media panopticon turns every public interaction into an opening for chaos.
