I think we are there now, not to be pedantic, but USD is a digital currency.
<1% of USD is physical, the banking system can track everything already. All the gov programs are 'on a card'.
I know that there are some extra shenanigans that a 'real' CBDC can facilitate like 'expiring' money, but i don't think that makes that much of a difference with the inflation happening.
